FKCI Sets World Record with 20' Diameter, 980' Deep Blind Drilled Shaft

4In the early morning hours of Wednesday, February 23, FKCI's Drilling Division completed a 20 ft. diameter blind drilled shaft for Cline Resource's Sugar Camp Mine in Southern Illinois. The final depth of the shaft was 980 ft., setting a new world record for the largest full face blind drilled shaft ever constructed. The shaft was drilled using the FK350MT, FKCI's blind drilling system. Congratulations and thanks to Charlie Ernst (Blind Drill Superintendent) and his crew, Dave Brickey (Senior Mechanical Engineer) and the rest of the Engineering Group, and all of the Shop personnel for their long hours of hard work. The project faced many challenges and obstacles, but once again FKCI's classic "can-do" attitude coupled with a strong sense of teamwork brought the project to successful completion. This achievement further secured our place as one of the premier blind drill contractors in North America.

Treated Water Tunnel Holes-thru at Sey-Cap

4On November 4, 2010 excavation of the Treated Water Tunnel was completed by Seymour-Cap Partnership, a joint venture of Frontier-Kemper Constructors ULC, Aecon Constructors, and JF Shea. The TBM excavated 3343m (10,968 ft.) of 3.8m (12.5 ft.) diameter tunnel in hard to very hard massive granitic and metavolcanic rock. The TBM will now be moved back outside the limits of the Capilano chamber area. This event follows the completion of the Raw Water Tunnel on October 14, 2010 (that TBM excavated 3,046m [9,993 ft.] of 3.8m [12.5 ft.] diameter in similar rock conditions). The Raw Water Tunnel trailing gear was separated from the TBM and was backed up to the entrance of the Capilano chamber to be used for power generation, pumping of water, mucking of the chamber, and raise bore excavations using the existing conveyors on the trailing gear. Both tunnels were completed ahead of schedule.

FKCI Sets a North American Record With 22' Diameter Raise Bored Shaft

4Frontier-Kemper Constructors recently completed a North American record breaking 22’ diameter raise drill shaft for Drummond Company’s Shoal Creek Mine located near Birmingham Alabama as part of a service shaft and hoisting system. Prior to raise drilling the shaft, a 13 ¾” pilot hole was drilled with FKCI’s Ingersoll-Rand RBM211M raise drill utilizing directional drilling tools. After collar construction, FKCI’s Robbins 81R raise drill was mobilized, the drill pipe was tripped-in and FKCI’s Sandvik 12E reamer base with 22’ extensions was attached to the drill pipe. Reaming began on March 31, 2010, progressed through relatively hard sandstones and softer shales, and holed through to the surface on July 22, 2010. The total reaming depth was 1,197’. The project also includes concrete lining to a 20’ finished diameter. FKC-Lake Shore will install a hoisting system with the assistance of the FKCI Mining Group to complete the turnkey package.

This project required extensive analysis of the required drill and tool selection and drilling parameters to complete this challenging task. Collaboration between FKCI’s Mining Group, Engineering Department, and Fabrication Shop along with assistance from Sandvik, Atlas Copco, Micon, MTI, and the Drummond Company was integral to the success of the project. We would like to thank everyone involved, with special thanks to the Owner, the Drummond Company, for allowing FKCI the opportunity to once again be the leader in innovation in order to meet the Owner’s and the Industry’s challenging requirements.
